The Mid-Autumn Festival is the night of reunion. In China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam, families gather to cut mooncakes, light lanterns and look at the brightest moon of the year — and those who cannot come home look at the same moon from wherever they are. Su Shi wrote it nine centuries ago: may we be together for a long time, sharing the moon across a thousand miles.

“A gentle acoustic song for the Mid-Autumn Festival, for my sister Mei Ling, who moved to Melbourne this year and can't come home to Kuala Lumpur. Every year we eat lotus mooncakes on our grandparents' balcony and Ah Ma saves the salted egg yolk for her. As kids we carried paper rabbit lanterns around the block. Say we still cut a piece for her, and put “Mei Ling” and “same round moon” in the chorus.”
