A Qixi song for the one you love

The night the magpies build a bridge across the Milky Way — a song with your story in it, sung with real vocals, for the person you would cross the sky for.

Qixi, the seventh night of the seventh lunar month, is the oldest love story in the Chinese calendar: the cowherd Niulang and the weaver Zhinü, parted by the Silver River and allowed to meet once a year on a bridge of magpies. In China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and wherever Chinese families live, it has become the night for flowers, dinners and confessions. A song fits it better than chocolate does — the whole festival is a story, and a song tells yours.

Describe the two of you: how you met, the distance you have crossed, the small habits that are only yours. The lyrics are written around them, a melody is composed and real vocals sing it, in Mandarin, Cantonese, English or a mix. About a minute later you have a love song to play under the stars or send across whatever river separates you.

Xiaoyu My Star

Pop, R&B · 2:47

“A romantic R&B love song for Qixi, for my girlfriend Xiaoyu. We met in a Shanghai bookshop reaching for the same poetry book, and now she lives in Shenzhen, so the high-speed train every second weekend is our magpie bridge. She hums when she cooks and always saves me the last dumpling. Mention the two stars and the bridge of magpies, and put “Xiaoyu” and “every night, not once a year” in the chorus.”

What to put in your Qixi song

  • 1

Their name, and the pet name you use — 宝贝, 老婆, 亲爱的 or the English nickname that stuck. A chorus with a name in it is the confession.

  • 2

Your own magpie bridge: the train you take every other weekend, the time difference you call across, the city that finally became one.

  • 3

The night you met, told like a legend — where you were standing, what they wore, the first thing they said.

  • 4

Vega and Altair. If you have ever looked up together, say so; the two stars of the story make a beautiful image for a verse.

  • 5

A promise for the next year — the trip, the flat, the question you are working up to.

  • 6

Something they make with their hands. Zhinü wove the clouds; maybe yours knits, codes, cooks dumplings or fixes everything.

  • 7

The language you love each other in. A line in Mandarin inside an English song, or the other way round, sounds like the two of you.

How a chorus could sound

Meet me on the bridge where the magpies fly,

Xiaoyu, you're my star in the seventh-moon sky,

a river full of light couldn't keep us apart —

one night a year? No, every night, my heart.

Ways to give a Qixi song

  • Over dinner. Ask for the bill, then play the song instead — it lands best after the flowers, when they think the evening is done.
  • Under the sky. Take them somewhere you can see the stars and play it outdoors; the legend is literally above you.
  • Across a distance. In a long-distance relationship, send it as a gift they unwrap on their phone — seal it until Qixi and the countdown becomes part of the present.
  • With something handmade. Qixi was once the night young women showed off their needlework and prayed for skill. A handmade gift with a printed card whose QR code plays the song (subscription) keeps that old meaning.

Which style suits the night

Qixi is romantic rather than loud. A soft R&B groove or a slow pop ballad suits a confession or an anniversary; a lighter, bouncy pop song suits a young couple's first Qixi. For something closer to tradition, ask for a gentle melody with guzheng or erhu colours under modern vocals. If you both grew up on Mandopop or Cantopop ballads of the eighties and nineties, mention it, and the song can borrow that warm retro sound.

Questions

Can the song be in Chinese?

Yes. The song can be sung in Mandarin, Cantonese or more than 40 other languages, and you can write the description in English while the song itself is in Chinese — or ask for a bilingual mix.

Can I include the legend of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl?

Yes — mention it in the description and the lyrics will use the magpie bridge, the Silver River or the two stars as images around your own story.

Is Qixi the same as Chinese Valentine's Day?

Share the link — it plays in any browser without an app — or send it as a gift page. You can also make a lyric video with your photos for them to keep.

Is the first song free?

Yes, your first song is free when you sign up, with no card needed. After that, songs are made with credits from a subscription or a one-off pack.
