A White Day song to answer their Valentine's gift

On 14 March in Japan, Korea and Taiwan it is your turn to give back. A song with their name is the return gift nobody else will bring.

White Day is Valentine's Day answered. In Japan and Korea it is traditionally women who give chocolate on 14 February; a month later, on 14 March, those who received it return the gesture with white chocolate, marshmallows, cookies or candy. In Japan people joke that a proper return should be worth three times the original. A song solves that nicely: it is personal, it took thought, and no department store sells it.

Tell us their name, what they gave you, and what you have been thinking since February. The lyrics, the melody and real vocals are ready in about a minute — in English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese or another language they love. Hand over the candy with the song playing, or send it as a gift they unwrap on their phone.

What to put in a White Day song

  • 1

What they gave you on Valentine's Day: homemade chocolate, a note in the box, the way they handed it over and ran.

  • 2

Honest feelings or a polite thank-you? A true answer for the person you love, a light, funny one for a colleague's courtesy chocolate.

  • 3

The month in between: what went through your head every time you saw them since 14 February.

  • 4

Your reply, if their gift was a confession. White Day is the classic moment to say “me too”.

  • 5

Sweet images that belong to the day: white chocolate, marshmallows, a candy box with a ribbon, the first spring blossoms.

  • 6

Your shared places: the campus library, the convenience store on the corner, the station where you always say goodbye.

  • 7

The sound: bright K-pop-style pop, soft acoustic for a shy answer, or a city-pop groove for a couple who love the eighties.

How a chorus could sound

Yuna, you gave me chocolate in the February snow,

I've had a month to find the words, and now I know,

so on the fourteenth of March, here's my reply —

sweeter than candy, it's you, and that's why.

How White Day works, and where a song fits

  • Japan. Men traditionally return gifts to the women who gave them chocolate on Valentine's Day — to partners, but also to colleagues who gave courtesy chocolate, and friends. The return gift is expected to be a little more generous than the original.
  • Korea. Candy is the classic White Day gift, often in elaborate baskets; singles have their own day a month later, Black Day.
  • Taiwan. Couples celebrate it as a second Valentine's.
  • With the gift. Seal the song until 14 March so it opens with a countdown, or, with a subscription, put a small card with a QR code into the box of sweets.

Matching the tone to the chocolate

Think about what the Valentine's gift meant. If it was a confession, answer it sincerely: name the moment, say what you feel, and let the chorus carry the answer. If it was courtesy chocolate from a colleague, make the song light and kind — a cheerful thank-you, nothing that sounds like a proposal. If you are already a couple, use the song to look back on your year together. In every case, keep it in a language they are comfortable with; a Korean partner may prefer the chorus in Korean even if you text each other in English.

Questions

What is White Day?

It falls on 14 March, a month after Valentine's Day, when people who received Valentine's gifts give one back. It is celebrated mainly in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, and is familiar to many fans of Japanese and Korean culture elsewhere.

Can the song be my answer to a Valentine's confession?

Yes. Describe how they confessed and what your answer is, and ask for their name in the chorus. The song says it for you, even if you are too shy to say it face to face.

Can it be sung in Japanese or Korean?

Yes. The song can be sung in more than 40 languages, including Japanese, Korean and Chinese, while you write the description in English.

Several colleagues gave me chocolate. One song for all of them?

Yes. Name each of them with a small friendly detail and ask for a light, cheerful tone. It makes a funny, memorable thank-you from the team.

Can I make it now and have it open on 14 March?

Yes. Send it as a gift sealed until 14 March; until then they see a countdown, and on the day they unwrap the song on their phone.
